About the Author
Dr. Robert W. Boxer is a practicing Allergist with an office in Skokie, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. Bob has created thousands of pun cartoons, almost all of them illustrated by Darnell Towns. For four years, pun cartoons incorporating the themes of Medicine and Sports appeared regularly in The Main Event: a Monthly Sports Journal for Physicians. Bob was named Punster of the Year by the International Save the Pun Foundation in 1993.
After graduating from Southwest High School in Kansas City, Mo., Bob earned his pre-medical degree at the University of Denver, then moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern University Medical School, served an internship and residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He trained in Allergy at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, where he taught for a number of years.
Bob has enjoyed punning most of his life (possibly his friends and colleagues haven't had the same degree of enjoyment). His original pun cartoon books include the two initial books which were general; BOXER'S SHORTS 3: The Medical Book; BOXER'S SHORTS 4: The Music Book; and soon to be available by Thanksgiving 2006, BOXER'S SHORTS 5: The Sports Book.
About the Illustrator
Born and raised in Chicago, Ill., Darnell Towns began drawing at the age of three. By age five, he had started creating his own characters and drawing cartoons from television, newspaper comic strips, and comic books. Darnell won his first art contest at age 13. In high school, he pushed his art even farther, working on large-scale group projects to be hung in the school auditorium. That school was Wendell Phillips High School, the same school from which his mother, Cleola Towns, and also Marla Gibbs (who played Florence on "The Jeffersons") graduated.
Darnell attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and worked on many freelance projects outside of school, including numerous booklets for Cook County Hospital. His animated film work won an honorable mention in the School of the Art Institute Traveling Fellowship competition.
After graduating with a bachelors degree in filmmaking and animation, Darnell answered an ad placed by Dr. Robert Boxer, a Skokie physician looking for a cartoonist to draw his ideas. Soon BOXER'S SHORTS was born. Darnell also became a cel painter and animator for children's films at Encyclopedia Britannica. He created cartoon strips, such as POLITOONZ, CARTOON MAN, and CLUB JAZZMIN. With his brothers John and Robert, he created "TOWNS TALES," a children's radio program of tales from around the world. Darnell also taught drawing and characterization and storyboarding at the Illinois Institute of Art for two years.
